Map of the Battle of the Bear Paw With Events

There are many events that happened in the Nez Perce battle of the Bear Paw(Bears Paw) as you can see below. The following list contains the memorable events and conflicts of the battle that took place 40 miles south of the border of Canada.
1. The orange circle by snake creek represents where the chiefs ordered camp. Being fatigued along with the siege at Big Hole left them with little supplies and the snake river was said to be bursting with fresh water and game. They camped without tepees so they built crude lodges and fire pits to warm up by.
2. This is where White Bird's son remembers he saw a Cheyenne warrior on a bluff shortly followed by the U.S. Army. Also, this is the place where Chief Joseph called to his people to save the horses.
3. This is the point where it began snowing in the evening and the Nez Perce dug trenches. They stayed under siege for 3 more days and a women and her child dies from a bomb shell that blew up their trench.
4. The outcrop rocks provided five Nez Perce warriors with temporary protection as they fought off the 2nd Calvary but they all died or were wounded; only two of these men made it back to camp.
5. In these rifle pits, Looking Glass mistook 7 of his own people for Sioux and shot them. Later, died from running out of his pit and standing in the open.
6. This is where the U.S. raised the flag of truce and Joseph met with Miles only to refuse and get captured. Lieutenant Jerome was captured by the Nez Perce later that day.

7. This was the site of the initial assault, the assault without any surprise on the side of the U.S. Army. After being severely handled by the Indians, company k of the army retreated. The fight left many officers and soldiers of the U.S. Army dead.
8. There were many dead and wounded soldiers said to be seen in this gully after the assault. The Nez Perce kindly brought water and blankets to the U.S. soldiers and their own people in this gully at night. 9. Here, the army regrouped after a disapointing few days of fighting and no progress. They attacked again, but this time, they brought in the Hotchkiss gun and the Nez Perce were forced to yield the high ground. 10. This is the sight of the field hospital for the army. A total of 28 soldiers died the past week and 2 were buried in their hometowns while the other 26 were buried in a mass grave. In 1912, the 26 were relocated to be buried on Custer Battlefield . 11. Finally, this is the rock where Chief Joseph handed over his rifle in surrender and gave his famous speech. |
